Day 16 Part One

We left our Hostel at 8am and hoped on our purple mini coach and headed for the Virgin Mary’s House. At the house we saw a large hole in the ground, which was used for baptising the adults, learnt that the site is special for Islamic people aswell as Catholics and that it is also important for the local Greek Orthodox People even though their Church doesn’t condone it as a pilgrimidge site. Some of us lit candles just outside of the house, or drank the holy water from the free flowing spring and others read the messages left on the prayer wall – one message, that was really sad was from Madeleine McCay’s parents saying not to give up on her.

Next some of the students went to have a relax and an early lunch at a very authentic Turkish Café, while a few of us decided to brave the heat and explore Ephesus.

Ephesus is by far my most favorite anchient ruin that we have visited. When you first walk in you see a medieveil street with colums on either side that leads to an amphitheatre that seats roughly 20000 people. Next you start to walk down the main street which leads to the famous library – this is an absolulty stunning piece of architecture. As you continue along the main street you have the terrace houses on your right (where the wealthy peoples of the time lived) and the first ever public toilet on your left, and from this vantage point you can really image being in a Roman City.

After rejoining the others and having some traditional Turkish pancakes, we headed for Marmaris, where we would spend the night.
